Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Pomodoro timer and the Pomodoro Technique.

What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo. It uses a timer to break work into focused 25-minute intervals (Pomodoros) separated by short breaks. After four Pomodoros, you take a longer break. This helps maintain focus and prevents burnout.

Is this Pomodoro timer really free?

Yes, completely free. There are no subscriptions, no hidden costs, and no premium features locked behind a paywall. All features are available to everyone at no cost.

Do I need to create an account?

No account is required. You can start using the timer immediately without signing up. All your settings and session data are stored locally in your browser.

How does the timer stay accurate when I switch tabs?

Our timer uses timestamp-based calculations instead of counting down. It calculates remaining time based on the end time, so it stays accurate even when your browser tab is inactive or minimized.

Can I use this timer offline?

Yes! You can install this as a Progressive Web App (PWA) and use it completely offline. Click the install button in your browser or add it to your home screen on mobile.

What are focus sounds and why would I use them?

Focus sounds are audio tracks that play during work sessions to help you concentrate. Options include a 512 Hz tone for deep focus, ambient music for creative work, and nature sounds for a calming atmosphere. They help mask distracting background noise and create a consistent work environment.

Does the timer work on mobile devices?

Yes! The timer is fully responsive and works on all devices including phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops. You can install it as an app on mobile devices for quick access.

How do I enable notifications?

Open the settings (gear icon) and toggle "Notifications" on. Your browser will request permission to show notifications. Once granted, you'll receive alerts when sessions complete, even if the tab is in the background.

Can I customize the duration of work and break sessions?

Absolutely! In settings, you can choose from multiple duration options: work sessions from 15-60 minutes, short breaks from 3-10 minutes, and long breaks from 15-30 minutes. Customize it to match your workflow.

What keyboard shortcuts are available?

Press Space to start/pause, R to reset, S to skip to the next period, and comma (,) to open settings. Press ? to see all available keyboard shortcuts.

Is my data private and secure?

Yes. All your data (settings, session history, and statistics) is stored locally in your browser using localStorage. Nothing is sent to our servers. Your productivity data remains completely private.

Why should I take breaks instead of just working straight through?

Regular breaks prevent mental fatigue, improve decision-making, boost creativity, and help maintain focus over longer periods. Research shows that taking breaks actually increases overall productivity and prevents burnout.
